City of Grand Rapids

Project: Participatory Budgeting

Service: RFP Writing

The Grand Rapids participatory budgeting initiative is a democratic process that allows residents to help determine how public funds are spent. It gives people real power over public money. Participatory budgeting allows residents to identify, discuss, and prioritize public spending projects and gives them the power to make real decisions about how money is spent. Khamai Strategies participated in this project by reimagining how Request for Proposals are written. Creating equitable access for community residents.

Key Deliverables

  • Created and developed 12 Request for Proposals (RFPs) in response to projects voted as winners by City residents.

  • Crafted RFPs utilizing an inclusive writing format to cater to all community residents.

  • Enhanced accessibility for residents to submit responses to the RFPs by ensuring language was tailored to accommodate varying education levels.

  • Collaborated with community partners to create an inclusive marketing plan for the RFPs to reach multiple target audiences.

I've worked in marketing and design for 18+ years, and even met my wife (also a graphic designer) while working at an ad agency. She is my balance. We now have two young children and are finally learning the value of sleep.
